High-gloss paste mold release wax for composite tooling
Honey Wax® 250 is a high-gloss paste mold release wax for composite fabricators. According to the current Stoner Molding Product Information, it is compounded with pure carnauba wax together with special binders and spreading agents. The formulation is designed for easy application and buffing while providing a reproducible, hard, non-staining release film.
Honey Wax® 250 is intended for new or reconditioned tooling surfaces. Because it is a manually applied wax system, release performance depends strongly on mold cleanliness, dryness and porosity, as well as correct haze and intercoat timing.
Key characteristics
- High-gloss paste mold release wax for composite fabrication
- Pure carnauba wax with special binders and spreading agents
- Designed for easy application and buffing
- Hard, non-staining release film
- For new or reconditioned tooling surfaces
- 12-month shelf life from date of manufacture
Recommended application procedure
- Thoroughly remove oils, grease, old wax, dirt and previous release agents. The PDS specifies BuffAway™ 2000 Polish followed by KantStik® Mold Cleaner; the surface must be completely dry.
- Apply 2 coats of KantStik® Sealer 1.0 to seal surface porosity.
- Apply a thin, even film of Honey Wax® 250 in circular motions using an applicator sponge or a clean, dry rag.
- Allow the coating to haze completely, approximately 2–15 minutes depending on ambient temperature and humidity. Solvents must fully evaporate and the wax film must be completely dry before buffing.
- Buff to a luster with a fresh, clean absorbent cloth or microfiber towel as soon as the wax film is fully dry.
- Wait approximately 10–15 minutes before the next coat. New molds typically require 5–7 initial applications, depending on mold porosity.
- After the first part is pulled, the PDS calls for two additional coats. For the third part, one application is sufficient; thereafter multiple pulls may be achieved depending on actual conditions.
New molds with polyester resin
When a new mold is put into service with polyester resin, the PDS recommends PVA over the 5–7 coats of Honey Wax® 250 for the first 2 molding cycles. This is not required when the mold is seasoned and being reconditioned.
Storage and packaging
The product contains flammable solvents. Reseal the lid after each use, store in a cool, dry place and use in a well-ventilated area. The stated shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture. The current Product Information lists 11-ounce cans, 12 cans per case, and 1 kg cans, 12 cans per case.
This content is based on the current Stoner Molding Product Information. Always review the latest PDS/SDS and validate the procedure on the actual mold, resin system and production conditions before implementation.
